We only have one day in Charleston on the backside of a cruise. We have never been to Charleston before. Can anyone give me ideas of what we should do? It is just my husband and I - we left the kids at home this time. What shouldn%26#39;t we miss? We will not have a car to travel, but we are staying at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina and there is a water taxi right there. I%26#39;d love to hear your opinions.
One day in Charleston
The most suggested one thing to do is take a carriage tour if you only have one day. That will give you a taste of what the city is all about. In addition, just wander around the historic district, visit the market and the shops %26amp; galleries and hit a few of the great restaurants.
Look through the recent Charleston threads and you%26#39;ll find lots more info on all the above as far as specific suggestions.
One day in Charleston
Thanks. The carriage ride sounds nice. My husband is a retired vet so I thought about going to see some of the military history there as well. Is the Historic district safe to walk around at night?
Yes, the HD is safe to walk around in at night, just as in any other city, use your head and stay in well lit areas.
If you are in Charleston on either Saturday or Sunday, you might want to go see the Hunley...

I agree with K.B. about the carriage ride and just walking around. You would probably really enjoy the tour at Patriot%26#39;s Point (aircraft carrier) but if you%26#39;re really ';into it'; it can take hours to ';do it right';.
The Hunley is great but you don%26#39;t have a car and it%26#39;s in a difficult-to-reach place in the bowels of the old Navy shipyard area and a car would be a must (unless you wanted to take a cab) but with one day only I wouldn%26#39;t go. (It%26#39;s great, but save it for your return trip to Charleston!) :)
Welcome to Charleston and enjoy!!!
Thank you so much. I already feel the southern hospitality.
A carriage ride is a definite must. we moved to the area about 2 years ago and whenever we have guests come to town, we always do a carriage ride and have always learned something new about the area on those rides.
Not sure wwat a cab ride would run, but Patriots Point might be of interest to your husband. The Yorktowne is there as well as other vessels and/or you could also take a ferry trip to Fort Sumter.
Hope you enjoy your stay!
It looks like a morning carriage ride, then either Fort Sumpter or Patriots Point in the afternoon. Any suggestions for lunch in the downtown area or dinner. We can%26#39;t get enough seafood when we are near the ocean. The lobster%26#39;s don%26#39;t do real well in the Mississippi river in Iowa. Thanks again.
SNOB in the HD usually has great lunch specials.
Dinner you have sooooo many choices, we like Hanks, Anson, High Cotton, the list goes on.
All these would more or less be Lowcountry w/a twist. Seafood available at all.
Just two points of clarification...
1. You can take a boat from downtown to Patriot%26#39;s Point (instead of an old boring cab!) Takes 10 minutes. They call it the ';water taxi';.
2. Lobsters are not what this area is known for - we are known for shrimp, oysters, crab. Typical ';Must have'; dishes here include ';Shrimp and Grits';, Oysters on the half shell, and ';She-Crab Soup';. Sure, you can get lobsters, but they%26#39;ll either be from Maine or they%26#39;ll be ';Florida Lobsters'; which are different. Tasty, but different.
ENJOY!
Thanks for the info. We are counting down the days.
