jelly fish in july

we are traveling to pawleys island and staying ocean front in july. we have never been and don%26#39;t live near an ocean. i am wondering if there is a ';season'; for more jellyfish or if there are always the same amt each month. if so, then is july a good or a bad month for jellyfish and what do i do if the kids or myself get stung? thanks for any advice for this ignorant mother.

Jellyfish threads already???

Just kidding...seems a lot of people get worked up about this. I can tell you I%26#39;ve been going to NC and SC beaches for 50 years now, and I%26#39;ve never been stung nor has anyone with me been stung. Does it happen? Sure, but people also get hit in the head by meteors sometimes. :)

While I don%26#39;t know the particular behavioral patterns of jellyfish, I do believe they are more active in shallow water in warmer weather. So the summer is probably the worst time for them, but as I said I%26#39;ve never had a problem with them. I wouldn%26#39;t waste two seconds worrying about it. Even if you get stung, it%26#39;s not a big deal from what I hear unless of course you happen to be allergic to them. I%26#39;m sure your doctor could test for that if you are that concerned about it.

Been going to MB for nearly 50 years now. Other than a very painful sting I got a couple of years ago none of us ever had anything worse than a sweat bee type sting. I don%26#39;t want to scare you but whatever got me that year was very painful and left burn looking scars for months. For days after the incident I would have infrequent but sudden pains that would make me say things in public that I shouldn%26#39;t say.

In 6 years I have never been stung by one. I have seen plenty of them in the years both washed up on the beach and in the ocean. If you see them, just swim away and get out of the ocean for awhile, also make sure you don%26#39;t step on them. If you do get a sting, see the life guard as they know how to treat for them and will contact an ambulance if needed (but have never seen it go that far).

Wow, it is early for this thread. I guess Spring is just around the corner. By far, the most frequently seen are the jelly balls (aka cannonballs). These are the clear jelly fish usually found on the beach. They do not have tentacles and therefore cannot sting. Some people with extremely sensitive skin supposedly may get a slight irritation if one comes in contact.

For the great majority of folks, the only real concern are Portugese Men-of-War, which occasionally show up around the beaches in late summer. These have a purplish color, very long tentacles, and can be dangerous. Stings need medical attention.

For any others, the usual treatment is to rinse the area with seawater (NOT fresh water) and apply either vinegar or meat tenderizer. Both work nicely.

Thanks everyone. We are from Illinois and I do start planning early. I appreciate everyones input.

Last year we were there the 12- 18th of July and the July fish were out. You could go in the water and have a great time but you had to watch. There was only maybe 1 day when the flag was out. Our 2nd trip was the 1st wk of Aug. 2nd-8th OH MY!!! it was bad!! they were everywhere. One of the girls with us was stung. The people next to us had 2 people stung and there was even a little girl (maybe 3-4) at our hotel that they had to take to the hospital because she was stung on both legs, arms and her side. The lifeguard was sooo busy with jellyfish stings that I don%26#39;t know how someone didn%26#39;t drown lol I know not funny but it was pretty bad. almost everyday the flag was out for them. They were easy to find on the beach dead tooo. We were down on S. Ocean this time at The Captains Qtrs don%26#39;t know if they were just on this end or all over but it was not great as far as the ocean swimming went the 2nd time around.

Hopefully you won%26#39;t have any problems

We typically go in September, which seems to be the worst for jelly fish. I was stung once, and it left a burn looking mark on my leg for a few weeks...but it was just a slight irritation. Just be careful! :)
