Which is the best place for BBQ on the Island?

We are coming to HHI this Thursday. What is THEEEE best BBQ on the island? We are bringing friends with us who have never been to HHI before. SO excited.

Anyway, he is a great cook (French/Canadian) and wants to do most of the cooking. Some friends are just so darned handy to take on vacation! Oh yeah, he is a real BBQ SNOB. He owns a ';Green Egg'; BBQ back here in Canada, if anyone knows what that is.

We are looking to take them to the best BBQ place. Smokehouse is within walking distance of the place we are staying.

What say you?

I%26#39;m at a loss. No, really. I have no opinion. Anyone surprised? :-)

So, I%26#39;m a big time fan of barbecue, but I%26#39;ve never even considered partaking of it on Hilton Head Island, because I assumed there wouldn%26#39;t be any ';down home, backwoods type'; BBQ places, which of course are the best. If anyone can tell me otherwise, let me know. But I suspect you%26#39;ll need to get out and drive the backroads to find the real stuff.

If your friend knows his regional barbecue (that%26#39;s a noun, not a verb) then he knows Carolina barbecue is slow smoked pulled pork.

Like Sweatman%26#39;s in Holly Hill. Only a 2 1/2 hour drive from HHI. But it has true South Carolina barbecue, which is mustard-based. While there are several valid South Carolina barbecue sauces, mustard based is the uniquely S.C. variety.

So, you might find decent BBQ at the Smokehouse, but whether it is the quintessentially sublime, back woods kind, you%26#39;ll have to let us know.

Jim %26#39;N Nick%26#39;s in Bluffton! You can google that and check out the menu. We used to do the Smokehouse before we got a recommendation to try Jim %26#39;N Nick%26#39;s...we never looked back :)

I second Jim N Nicks. Two other places you can try is Dosido%26#39;s in the Moss Creek Shopping center, or Sticky Fingers on Palmetto Bay road.

Forgot to mention Dukes in Beaufort. Southern Living has it as one of the top places in the USA.

D,

I was following your other post about going to Charleston on a day trip. If done,I to would say that Duke%26#39;s in Beaufort is a must %26amp; you could time it on the way home from Charleston. They are only open Friday and Saturday until 9 p.m.(I think). And they are very resonable too. Around $11 for buffet.

If you decide to go to Savannah the Pink Pig is very good on the back road (Rt. 17/170). They are only open on the weekend also.

Third choice would be Jim %26amp; Nick%26#39;s.

Dosido%26#39;s is out of business from what I understand.

Many thanks to all of you who have responded to my ';best BBQ'; question so far.

So far my speculation has proved right, no ';great'; barbecue on the island, gotta venture off-island to get it.

Looks like my personal short list to try down the road is Jim N Nicks, Dukes, and Pink Pig (had heard of this one), depending on whether I want to venture North, South, or West. Thanks!!

Isle- you%26#39;re a smart person young Jedi!

My personal list...

On island in this order...

One Hot Mamas (brisket and sunday brunch buffet)

Smokehouse (pulled pork, brisket and ribs)

Sticky Fingers (pulled pork and dry rub ribs)

Big Bamboo (spicy ribs)

Aligator Grill (BBQ Aligator ribs - tasty!)

Off island in this order...

Sgt White%26#39;s Diner Beaufort (pulled pork)

Jim N Nicks (brisket and pulled pork)

Old Daufuskie Crab Co (pulled pork)

Dukes BBQ Walterboro (pulled pork buffet!)

Marshside Mamas - Daufuskie (ribs)

Squat and Gobble (pulled pork)

If your wife/girlfriend isn%26#39;t a dedicated carnivore

(like mine) take her to One Hot Mamas. They have specialty salads with firecracker shrimp, grilled chicken, etc. Also the sunday brunch has made to order omelettes and other breakfast food while you pig out on.....pig, of course. Nothing beats a half pound of pulled pork bbq on a hot biscuit topped with a handful of bacon slices! Or ten.

Their lunch menu Meat and 3 sides is $8.50. Can%26#39;t beat it.

:-D

Squat and Gobble has slow cooked greek diner-style pulled pork. Sgt White%26#39;s has the best cornbread on the planet and outstanding bbq. Google it. Sticky Fingers has great dry rub ribs that are a lot less messy and have just the right ';tug'; when tearing the meat off the bones. Dukes in Walterboro is right off the interstate and some of the best mac-n-cheese to go with their near perfect bbq. Old Daufuskie Crab Co smokes their butts right in the corner of the restaurant with great fried okra and mac-n-cheese. Be careful not to sit near the smoker or your family pet will never leave you alone for several days.

Also be on the lookout for Elgie Stover and his bbq smoker in the parking lot at Vics Tavern and other places. Another outstanding on-island favorite. Google his name for more info about his Motown roots and musical career.

Feel free to go on a BBQ adventure while here. They are all completely different.

Have fun!
