Need help planning a wedding!

We have vacationed in the Litchfield/Pawleys area for over thirty years, and this is where my daughter wants to get married! It will be a small wedding and probably in the off-season, either before or after the peak season.

I need hlep with venues, where to get flowers, catering, licensing, and who performs ther services.

Lately, we have been vacationing in early September, so I have an idea of the what to expect as far as weather, including that this is hurricane season! We have vacationed in May, but the weather was chilly. Was this typical, or just our luck on that trip?

Your bad weather in May was just bad luck. May would be an excellent choice. Also, consider October, which is especially lovely in the lowcountry because the sweetgrass is in plume. By October, the hurricane threat this far north has diminished.

You are most likely to have bad weather in September, and September hurricanes are no joke. Although we usually spend time on Kiawah in late September, we would not have wanted our daughter to risk September for her Kiawah wedding! It%26#39;s easy enough to cancel a vacation, or to pack up if you have to evacuate. It%26#39;s a lot more difficult and upsetting to relocate or reschedule a wedding.

Just a reminder ... The infamous Hurricane Hugo made landfall at Charleston on Thursday, September 21, 1989. Anyone who was planning a wedding that weekend was completely out of luck! Here is what Hugo did to Pawley%26#39;s Island (from the NOAA ';Coastal Services Center website):

';Hurricane Hugo took its toll on the beach and development on Pawleys Island. Areas landward of large dunes were protected from overwash. Low dunes also survived, probably because they were rapidly flooded and overtopped by the storm surge. More than 3 miles of shoreline required emergency beach nourishment following the storm. Development at the south end was severely impacted and 27 of the 29 houses located there were destroyed. A channel breached the southern spit but was consequently filled and the houses rebuilt.';

Two very popular wedding locations are (1) the chapel on Pawleys Island (small) - pawleysislandrealty.com/sitepages/pid288.php and (2) Litchfield Plantation - http://www.litchfieldplantation.com/ I%26#39;m sure Litchfield Plantation is full service, including catering, flowers, etc. but I%26#39;m not sure about the Chapel. Of course, a lot of people simply get married on the beach.

Marriage licenses are issued by Probate Court in Georgetown, SC - georgetowncountysc.org/probate/default.html

If you Google caterers and florists in Pawleys Island, you%26#39;ll have several to choose from.

Usually, May is a very pleasant month around here, weatherwise. Here are average temps for the area but of course they can vary widely: weather.com/outlook/…29572

I remember all of the damage from Hugo, and how long it to for the dunes to come back. I had an uncle living in the Battery in Charleston, and sat here in Kentucky, watching the storm reports, and worrying for the safety of our family and what was happening to our beloved Litchfield and Pawleys Island. All were ok in the end, but battered by the storm. It took my uncle over a year to get his house repaired.

We already have a house for two weeks in Pawleys spanning the Labor Day weekend. I agree with you about packing up from a vacation vs. cancelling a wedding ceremony. Still, trying to decide whether to chance it. There are dates available at both Litchfield Plantation and Brookgreen for the weekend, and Labor Day would be good for people coming from out of town.

Weather ';is what it is';.

Chances are that you will get a beautiful day. If you and your daughter are willing to take the risk with September, then go for it!

Availability of your desired locations and vendors is a BIG plus. However, there IS a reason why beautiful venues are still available for September ... and you know what it is! Just be sure the bride understands that anything can happen and, one way or the other, it will be a happy day.

Speaking of weather, Louisville (where my family lives) has taken quite a hit in the past six months with wind and ice. Glad you folks are OK and in the mood to plan a wedding! I am sure that the lowcountry%26#39;s Labor Day heat sounds very appealing.

huntington beach state park at Atayla would be beautiful.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It looks like the wedding will be next May or June, parents only, and a reception in New York where my daughter and her fiance live.

We%26#39;ll still ';do it up'; in one of these venues, and you%26#39;ll probably hear from me again!

You may want to consider one of the beautiful old churches in G%26#39;town if you are into that.

Although I would love to read your report of a wedding on Pawleys Island, I think that you have made a very wise decision on behalf of the young people who would want to make the trip from NYC.

When our daughter married on Kiawah in 2006, her friends traveled from London (where she and her ';now husband'; live and work) and from New York. It was a truly lovely weekend. But, as our daughter now observes: ';It was a BULL MARKET FANTASY.';

Best wishes to you and to the happy couple!

It%26#39;s the NYC reception during this ';Bear Market'; that has me nervous! We are hopeful that NYC prices will respond to this difficult economy, and this seems to be happening.

I am very happy, however, that she has chosen Pawleys for her ceremony as we have so many wonderful memories from our vacations there. My father%26#39;s family is from South Carolina, and I%26#39;ve always considered myself a Carolinian at heart.

Your daughter probably has some ideas about reception venues in NYC. If she knows anyone who belongs to one of the private clubs, it might be worth investigating a referral for the occasion. The clubs often end up being less expensive and, of course, they handle the catering.

You could also post for advice on TA%26#39;s NYC forum, which is my ';home'; forum. The NYC experts are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Don%26#39;t be put off by the acerbic New York ';wit';! LOL
