How warm is the ocean in Edisto Beach in mid-May? It%26#39;s been a long time since I%26#39;ve been on the Atlantic side and can%26#39;t remember if it%26#39;s warm enough to get in.
Water temp in Mid May
The ocean water along the SC barrier islands is warmed by the gulf stream. By mid-May, I find the water still cool enough to be ';refreshing';, but warm enough to stay in for a swim.
How warm the water will be near shore depends on how warm and sunny the weather has been over a period of several days. In addition to warming the surface of the water, the sun heats up the sand. When the tide comes in over the hot sand, the water warms as well.

Thank you. I think that sounds perfect.
It depends on your personal taste. The water temp will be around 70 degrees then. Being a native of the Lowcountry, I find that too cool for me (I generally don%26#39;t get into the water until June). However, I have seen lots of folks from the northern climes who think that it is great.
Very true, Edistotiger!
My family members who live in England think our water is fine in mid-March, when I can%26#39;t get in further than my toes!
It%26#39;s all a matter of perspective.
I agree with EdistoTiger. I find the water too cool for me, yet I see people getting in the water like it%26#39;s the middle of summer. Depends on where you%26#39;re from. I%26#39;ve seen people in Minnesota laying out in the sun when it%26#39;s 50 degrees outside and I had a coat on.
