Going with a buddy...what to do??

ok so i%26#39;ve been to charleston a lot, but only been with my wife. we typically shop, and eat at some great local joints but thats really it. we%26#39;ve done the tours, and all that good stuff.

a buddy of mine has never been, and is wanting me/him to go down for a weekend this month. just a sat/sun...

we%26#39;re not into clubbing or anything like that, but a nice bar scene might be nice. we%26#39;re planning to come on the weekend of the 21st...any ideas? anything cool going on this weekend i%26#39;m not aware of?? I figured we would spend saturday shopping down king street, eating a jestines or something like that, but what i%26#39;m trying to figure out is what to do sat. night and sunday...

thanks

Going with a buddy...what to do??

If you%26#39;re into history at all, go see the Hunley...

http://www.hunley.org/

It%26#39;s only open on weekends. My hubby and son went a few years ago and had a great time.

Going with a buddy...what to do??

The Hunley is REALLY interesting, and the volunteer guides - mainly Navy and AF vets - are great storytellers.

My husband really likes dinner at Hank%26#39;s Seafood, where you can eat at the bar or at the long communal table if you don%26#39;t feel like waiting for a private table, and lunch at Joseph%26#39;s, where the sandwiches (like the oyster po%26#39;boy) are delicious, cheap, and enormous.

In the evening, you might like Bulldog Tour%26#39;s tour of the Old Jail. The social history and the setting are interesting, and ';tough to take';.

thanks for the tips. not to big on seafood or history about ships, but the jail tour sounds cool. i actually did the ';dark side fo charleston'; tour last year and it was really neat. the guide told us stories in details on events that happened pointing at exact places, building, even places in the road and we found it to be rather neat. so yea, we might check that out sat night.

any other ideas?? is the market pavilion rooftop bar area still a neat place to hang out?

Here%26#39;s a recent thread about rooftop bars:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g54171-i105-k23910…

I can%26#39;t help with the bars, since we are always making the hazardous 40-minute drive back to Kiawah and don%26#39;t dare stop at the bar!

Make advanced reservations for the jail house tour. The after-dark jail tours are especially popular and may fill up on a Saturday night.

An FYI ... The Hunley is actually the Confederate submarine that sank in Charleston Harbor, and was lost with all hands until a few years ago. It%26#39;s a lot more interesting than the standard ';old ship'; tour.

If the weather is cooperating both the rooftop at the Market Pavilion and the rooftop bar at the Library (Vendue Inn) are very nice, Library gets a little younger crowd I think. If you are shopping on King St. I might suggest trying Virginia%26#39;s on King for lunch. Menu similar to Jestine%26#39;s in my opinion without the long line. About one block north of Calhoun. Used to be the Bookstore Cafe, on Saturday they do have a brunch menu which is pretty nice.

thanks again, yea we are Hoping for good weather. Here%26#39;s a thought. We are both somewhat into fitness. Bike riding, hiking, anything to that nature. With that being said, is there anything to do in charleston/isle of palms/kiawah island area worth doing??

also just checked out virgina%26#39;s website and read the reviews. reviews are somewhat mixed, but pictures/menu have me sold! ha. Will most def have to try it. Thanks!

Thanks for giving us a short list of your ';likes';. May I suggest (free) biking or walking/jogging across the Ravenel Bridge; going to the beach (you can rent bikes there, too - our beaches are perfect for biking and jogging), kayaking maybe? There are several places you might try. You could also go off-shore fishing or perhaps take a kitesurfing lesson or go golfing. If any of these interest you - let us know and we can supply more info.

You asked, so here%26#39;s my day trip to the Johns%26#39;s %26amp; Wadmawlaw Island areas, including a kayak trip, if you are interested...

Ralph does a wonderful kayak trip (we%26#39;re friends, in the same kayak club), maximum paddlers is 6, I%26#39;m sure he%26#39;d gladly take 2. If you call Ralph, tell him you heard about him from Beth...

Take a dolphin tour in the marshes, call them to arrange ahead of time. They depart from the Cherry Point Landing where there is a shrimp dock, as well (you may be too early for shrimp season)...

You can hit the Angel Oak on the way...

And the winery...
