Fishing on Edisto Island

We%26#39;re camping at Edisto State Park the third week of June. My husband enjoys salt water fishing from the shore or off piers. Is there good fishing on the island? If so, what%26#39;s biting this time of year: What bait is recommended? Any light you can shed on the fishing possibilities will be appreciated.

Fishing on Edisto Island

It%26#39;s been a few years since I have been to Edisto, but when I was there we did a little off shore fishing and also some crabbing. Both were kind of a let down, but we may not have been in the right place or just unskilled. My friend and I caught several things we threw back; such as an eel, a sea turtle (not harm done - just hooked under it%26#39;s shell), and several crabs. We found the birds loved to see what we were baiting our hooks with, and would even come just within arms length to snag a shrimp or two. The crabbing was simple and if you have the patience to find one large enough it would be great to have fresh crab! (I think it%26#39;s 5'; across it%26#39;s back to keep). Considering Edisto is such a small community you can probably stop into any of their small stores and ask the locals (who I%26#39;m sure would know a lot better than me!). Hope you have better luck than we did!

Fishing on Edisto Island

Hi,

This looks like an old post but someone may stumble across it looking for information.

I have been fishing to Edisto for the last 9 years, every Fall ( even though I have been living in Europe for the last 5 !) Fishing is excellent at the right time of year, at the right place and with the right bait.

My recommendation is to visit Bell Bouy and get fresh shrimp for your bait. What you don%26#39;t use you can cook to go with the fish in the evening, or if you have no luck at all have a shrimp dinner.

What do we catch? Whiting, Red Drum, Sea Trout, Sheepshead, all good eating. Sting rays and sharks go back..

To put things in perspective my father (who also flys over from the trip ) caught a 39 inch Red Drum last year. Of course it went back, but wow what a thrill.

Good luck to me who will be there next, I have some catching up to do, since my record is a meager 27 inches....

Bye from Switzerland and HELLO EDISTO on next Sunday ( 19th Oct. 2008 )

Your message was helpful to us. We will be there in June! We shore fish and are curious if there is any ';tips'; you recommend that time of season? We are from Colorado so as you know the fishing is quite different here. Thanks for your help!

I%26#39;m spending spring break in Edisto in a couple of weeks. I was wondering if someone could shed some light on what kind of fishing conditions there might be. Also, how is the inland fishing? I plan on renting some kayaks for a day or so and see what I can get into to. -Thanks
