We are a group of about 12 from Wisconsin going to the Charleston area in October for the first time to celebrate 50th birthdays. We would like to rent a beach house for 4 nights and wonder what area is recommended - Isle of Palms, Folly Beach, Kiawah Island?? Specific rental contacts would be great - we would like to be right on the beach, not a few blocks from it. Any info on great restaurants, nightlife and fun things to do would also be appreciated. This is a very active, fun loving group.
Beach house rentals and fun things to doCheck with some of the rental agents on Folly: island realty, dunes properties. They will be able to steer you in the right direction. We have stayed in several houses and condos on Folly. My favorite is Pavilion Watch condos...three bedrooms, three baths, steps from public beach access and the pier, private pool. You will also be about a 15-minute drive from Charleston for nightlife activities.
Beach house rentals and fun things to doFun loving!--definitely think Folly. Not downtown dining, but some good, lively places. Avocet reality is another option. I would not contact Fred Holland Reality.
What are the chances of a Hurricane hitting the end of Oct on Folly Beach? What will the weather be?
By the end of October, you are pretty much at the end of hurricane season, chances are pretty slim (I think officially it runs through November).
The weather will be cooler and wonderful, you can still plan all the outdoor activities you want.
I went to Folly Beach last August and loved it. You must go to the pier and eat at the Crab Shack.
We used Dunes Properties for our rental, but it was only the two of us, so we got a condo. It was at the Charleston Oceanfront Villas, and it was very, very nice.
Kiawah is beautiful but a serious drive to the events and attractions of the city. Great place to steal away and relax but can be a little too relaxing.
Isle of Palms is a great spot too and near Charleston. Mount Pleasant is just inland and offers dining and shopping. The IOP also has a resort on the northern/eastern of the island which is private unless you are scheduled for a round of golf. The remainder of the island is most residential.
Folly Beach is the closest beach to Charleston and has a fun and funky ';downtown area.'; Lite shopping and dining and great live music. The prices tend to be better for rental in this area as well.
The entire area has quite a bit to offer... what are some ideas you have for your trip? Any specific events or interests?
Specific rental companies: Avocet or Dunes West. I would avoid Fred Holland. May also want to review VRBO web site. Folly is not fine dining, but you can find good food.
Locklears on the Pier offers a quality dining experience without the formal attire. A very well known local establishment with great plates and prices. For rental companies on Folly Beach... Dunes Properties, Avocet, or Fred Holland. (Dunes West is a Community in Mount Pleasant on the other side of Charleston.)
