Travel for June with husband & pregnant self....

My husband and I are looking to get away in June some time. I will be 6 mths pregnant and just love to sit at the beach or pool and get a facial or massage. He would like to play golf maybe a day or two, doesn%26#39;t have to be every day, all day. We like to go out to nice dinners %26amp; such. We wanted to go to the Costa del Sol but I feel it may be too much at that time. So I have been looking at other beachy places in the states. Any one have any thoughts on Isle of the Palm, SC- about 10 miles from downtown Charleston. What about Myrtle Beach (i%26#39;m not sure of the scene there) or Hilton Head?

We live in Southern VT.

Any other thoughts on nice spots?

Before kids, go to Charleston. After the kids come, and while they%26#39;re young, you%26#39;ll probably enjoy Myrtle Beach since it%26#39;s like a giant theme park.

You mentioned IOP - that%26#39;s great - relatively reasonably-priced and close to the city, yet with plenty of local golf (the public courses off-island are much less expensive than the beautiful courses on-island.) Lots of choices for sure.

One thing I%26#39;d recommend is either renting a place with beach furniture or renting beach furniture. You will (in your condition) find it way more comfy to sit in a beach chair than to try to sit on our firm beaches. (Great beaches, but the soft sand is limited to the area near the dunes). June is a great time to be here as the weather is great, the water temps warm up, and the days are not too hot. However, early June is the end of the Spoleto festival, Charleston%26#39;s biggest annual festival so book early.

Other nice spots are a longer drive to the city and have fewer options for golf, dining, etc (Kiawah Island and Seabrook, for example, are great but you will probably want to be closer to lots of options and services)

Enjoy your visit!

Thank you. That is so helpful. Can you tell me if the Wild Dunes Resort is worth staying at in IOP? It looks relatively nice- huge but nice. They have spa services so I was thinking it would be good for me while my husband is out golfing. Also, as far as golf goes, do you know of good, reasonably priced courses or if we stay at Wild Dunes should he just play there? If we look into renting an apartment- where is a good place to start with that? What area would we want to be in? Thanks so much.

Wild Dunes really isn%26#39;t that ';huge'; - it is miniscule compared with Hilton Head, for example. The whole of Wild Dunes doesn%26#39;t have a bad spot on it - every lodging type is different - but I will say when you make a reservation, ask about the number of stairs you will have to walk up if that will be a concern for you in June. (there are places with elevators, which you might prefer).

Golf courses - there are quite a few within 10 minutes of Wild Dunes that are relatively inexpensive (though the WD courses are great). Charleston National, Patriot%26#39;s Point, Rivertowne, and Dunes West are all nice and closeby. One tip though is since the gators are out tell hubby not to get too close to the ponds. If a ball goes in, it%26#39;s in - take a drop. I have never heard of anyone getting bitten who golfs, but being from Southern VT you are not used to alligator etiquette so I%26#39;ll say ';always assume they%26#39;re alive';. (most of the time they look fake since they don%26#39;t move sometimes for hours).

I have commented a couple of times to your similar post on the IOP forum. Wild Dunes is a 1600 acre gated community on the north end of IOP. Wild Dunes Resort is a property owner in that community. They own and operate the Boardwalk Inn, manage a number of the private villas (condos) and developed the Village at WD. Both of the golf courses in WD were designed by Tom Fazio and are well worth playing at least once. My personal favorite in the area is Rivertowne though Dunes West is a close contender. The most expensive course is the Links at WD.

If you want a resort type setting, you probably want to stay in the Boardwalk Inn or one of the condos in the Village. By ';resort type setting'; I mean having the spa, fitness facility, tennis courts etc. right there. The Harbor Course ';clubhouse'; is right across the street. The downside is that you will be in the most densely occupied area of WD and it can get a little crowded. You also will have a bit of a walk to the beach, but I believe that once you get there they provide chairs and umbrellas. There is little chance you will have a direct ocean view.

You may want to consider a one bedroom condo in one of the condo communities at the north end of WD such as Mariner%26#39;s Walk or Port O%26#39;Call. I%26#39;m not sure if Shipwatch, Seascape, Summer House or Ocean Club have one-bedroom units but they are also ocean front options. If you choose POC try for an end unit (ending in %26#39;01 or %26#39;04) in either the B building or the F building. Both of these are directly ocean fron and the end units have an ocean view from the dining area. If you have a first floor unit, you can walk directly from your screened porch onto the beach. The Links Course is right across the street from POC.

As CH said, there is no bad part of WD. I%26#39;m sure you will enjoy WD where ever you choose to stay. The golf is great, though it is much different playing on bermuda that the grasses you have in Vermont.
