Boston Yankee planning to be in Charlston with 17 year old son on March 18th, leave March 21. Primary purpose of visit is to visit College of Charlston and get a feel for the city to see if my son would be interested in going there.
We are staying in the Historic Distric without a car.
My son is interested in history and sports. We plan to do some touristy things like visit Fort Sumter. Any other suggestions would be welcome, especially for something to do in the evening.
There is a Stingrays hockey game on Friday night. Is there any way to get there without a car? About how much would a cab cost and would there be a problem getting a cab back after the game?
Evening Activities With Teen. Hockey?
May I suggest renting a car just for one day - for the time you%26#39;ll need it to get to the Friday night hockey game in North Charleston (near the airport) and then go the next morning to visit the Hunley and/or Patriot%26#39;s Point? www.enterprise.com It%26#39;ll save you a lot of headache and probably some cash if you just have the car for the one 24-hr period. You can get the car in the city and drop it off there. The Hunley is only open on Saturdays and Sundays and is a really interesting tour (it is the Civil War Sub that sank the Housatonic here in the Charleston area; it was discovered and moved to a laboratory to restore it - or preserve it; not quite sure). www.hunley.org
If you had a car, your son would get a better idea of the ';lay of the land';. I think for a college guy it would be important to see the beaches - Folly Beach is the one that most C of C kids go to, but Sullivan%26#39;s north of the city and Isle of Palms (IOP) just north of Sullivan%26#39;s are also popular. If you go to Patriot%26#39;s Point you%26#39;ll be just 5 minutes from Sullivan%26#39;s.
I%26#39;d suggest going to some of the popular casual dining places that ';the kids'; like - on upper King Street there%26#39;s Juanita Greenberg%26#39;s (eat on the raised deck/patio out back); Jim N Nick%26#39;s Barbecue; Yo Burrito are a few favorites.
Welcome to Charleston and Enjoy! GREAT place to go to college.
