The flights are booked (Heathrow to Newark and then on to Savannah)and the hotel is booked in Charleston(thanks culturehound for your advice re Hotwire) but how do we get from Savannah to Charleston without hiring a car?
I%26#39;ve looked on the Amtrak website but there only appear to be 2 trains a day - one early in the morning and the other in the evening. Am I looking in the right place as I assumed there would be a more frequent service?
Is there an alternative bus/coach service and if so is it more frequent?
Many thanks
Bus/train or coach?
Yes - 2 Amtrak%26#39;s a day is correct.
There is another way - but you will still need a couple of cabs.
Cab to the Greyhound Bus station in Savannah; (bus leaves at a convenient 10:15 am.) take the Greyhound bus (www.greyhound.com) and cab from Charleston Greyhound bus station. There seems to be only one bus per day. The cabs...I don%26#39;t know how readily available since I haven%26#39;t bussed in to Charleston - maybe someone reading this will comment.
It%26#39;s a bit more --- hmmmmmm as I tap my chin with 3 fingers ---- rustic/bohemian/casual than the train.
Glad you got the deal! You will be thanking me more later, trust me!
Bus/train or coach?
Everything is now booked (accommodation and travel)for our month long trip from Savannah to New York except for one thing.
It%26#39;s the first part from Savannah to Charleston and I%26#39;m tending to think a hire car is going to be the best option.
If we do this would it be possible to visit one of the plantations en route or is that going out of our way?
Thanks
Stellar idea to hire a car. On the way? Not really, but then again not really ';out of the way'; either. Will you have a GPS or print out a map? 3 of the plantations are on Hwy 61 which runs basically parallel to Hwy 17 for a good length and then when 17 makes a left turn it intersects perpendicularly (give or take). Print out a good map and you%26#39;re good to go (and one of the Kiawah ladies - beth or villa, I forget - wrote specific instructions how to get from Hwy 17 to the plantations. Maybe they%26#39;ll re-post here or I%26#39;ll find the instructions.
Enjoy!
Here%26#39;s a link of a map to Middleton Place. Magnolia %26amp; Drayton Hall are both on the same road...
www.middletonplace.org/default.asp?catID=4566
Hope this helps!
There are signs along the roadway, as well after you get off of 526.
Enjoy!
